Meet WAAV Creative - Kassandra Camilla Reyes
Kassandra is an artist specializing in painting, wood decor, embroidery, and laser cuts. When asked about her creative journey, Kassandra replied, “Ever since I was young, I’ve always had a passion for painting flowers, and I was lucky enough to turn this passion into a business while studying at Christopher Newport University. After graduating in 2017, Creations became my full-time job.” Kassandra’s art style is heavily inspired by the beauty and uniqueness of flowers. Her passion for art stems from “being able to take something that surrounds us every day and recreate it as [my] own”. Kassandra’s floral cover pattern “Amanda,” is named after an empowering female artist who inspires her, and it is featured in the exclusive inaugural collection of WAAV Planners. We sat down with her and asked her a few questions to get to know her and her creative process!
1. Tell us about yourself! When did you know that you wanted to be an artist?
Ever since I was little, I've been in love with art. I grew up drawing and painting in school and at home, and I developed a love for painting nature scenes and flowers. I am mostly self-taught, but I would watch Donna Dewberry's VCR tapes when I was younger to try to learn how to paint flowers. I ended up minoring in Studio Art at Christopher Newport University, and after starting my business in 2014, I decided to go full time once I graduated in 2017. I love being able to create something with my own hands, and it makes me so fulfilled to see how my artwork has inspired others.
Where did the inspiration behind your cover come from? Why did you name it "Amanda?"
I wanted to name the cover after someone who I felt empowers others, so "Amanda" cover was named after Amanda Gorman. After I heard her recite her poem at the 2021 Inauguration, I was so inspired by her strength and passion which is ultimately why I wanted to name my cover after her.
3. When you're not working on your art, what else can we find you doing?
When I'm not painting, I'm usually at the gym, playing piano, or planning my next trip to travel somewhere! I love to spend time with my friends and also love trying out new restaurants.
Why were you excited to partner with WAAV?
I was so excited to partner with WAAV not only because I'm OBSESSED with planners, but mainly because of their desire to empower others. I love that WAAV is a resource for people to work on themselves while also offering amazing designs on their planners. It makes me excited to be able to work with a company that wants to positively affect others.
What is your perfect Friday night?
A perfect Friday night would probably include cuddling up with my kitten and eating a ton of chocolate chip cookies while watching the Bachelorette on TV.
Who are some artists that inspire you and your style?
There are 2 artists who inspired me and my love for painting flowers. Before I was even in middle school, I would obsess over how beautiful Georgia O'keeffe's flower paintings were. I wanted to be able to paint flowers like her so I spent a lot of time practicing. The other artist is Donna Dewberry who really inspired my style of painting. I would watch her tutorials and practice every single day. She was a huge inspiration to me and still is.
1. Dogs or cats? Both… but currently obsessed with cats now!
2. Sweet or salty? Sweet!
3. Favorite season? Summer
4. In n out order? The biggest burger on the menu!!
5. Drink you order at the bar? Lemon drop shooter
6. Does pineapple belong on pizza? Always
7. Your pizza order? A pizza with lots of meat and cheese
8. Favorite movie? Anything with Zac Efron
9. Favorite band? Maroon 5
Okay, last question… If you had to fight 1,000 duck-sized horses or 1 horse-sized duck, which would you choose and why?
I would have to say if I'm fighting, I would choose 1 horse-sized duck because I have a better chance of running away… 1,000 duck sized horses sound really cute and I wouldn't want to fight them!
